Fish Out Of Lava

Fish Out Of Lava

Apr 7, 2015

Once you have completed the fishing quest given to you by Harek Silverscale in Northguard, you can return to the Wizard City Commons and have another chat with Lucky Hookline. He’s got a new assignment for you… DRAGONSPYRE fishing! He warns you that fishing here may be different that what you’ve gotten used to, but he also knows someone who can help. And with that, you’re on your way to visit Yuri Smokesnare in the Atheneum! Before you head over to Yuri, however, we recommend making a quick trip to Timor Flamecaster in The Labyrinth. Wizards who are at rank 2 fishing level or above can train “Reveal Fish Rank 1”, which allows you to see all rank 1 fish in a fishing hole, making it easier to identify those rare and epic fish! Wizard who are at rank 3 fishing level or above can train the “Winnow” line of fishing spells, which allow you to scare away all fish but those of a particular school.

You can find Yuri hiding out in the same corner and Baltshazar Dragonthorn, your Dragonsypre crafting master.

Yuri points out that, unlike fishing in water, you won’t be able to wade into lava in order to get closer to the fish you want to catch. You’d best get used to using your “charm fish” spell to bring them closer to you!

The good news is, Yuri has a lot of new spells for you to train as well! Not only can you train spells that will help you identify small fries and whoppers (and also those fish that are ALMOST small fries and whoppers; no guarantees here, sadly), but you get Rank 3 lures! These are pretty necessary because [drumroll please…] there are now Rank 3 fish to catch!

yurispells

You’ll need to prove yourself to Yuri by catching several fish, and learning how to deal with (and even catch!) those pesky sentinels. Sentinels are a new type of fish who make it their business to protect other fish. They are easily recognizable by their distinct, spiny shadows.

sentinelsilhouette

If they see a lure in the water, they run for it quickly, which frightens your fish away.

You can deal with Sentinels in a few ways.

  1. Avoid them. Fish in areas where you won’t need to deal with them, or check thoroughly for their location first and then cast your lures so far away that they won’t notice them. (This may be difficult; Sentinels have an extremely broad range.)
  2. Fish them all out. You do this by throwing lures in to the water where there are no other fish you want to catch, so that you don’t lose those fish along with it. This causes the sentinels to run at you, which gives you the chance to catch them. You can catch a Sentinel by invoking your lure the SECOND the Sentinel becomes interested in it. Don’t wait for the lure to go under, or it’s already too late and they will have stolen it.
  3. You can use your Banish Sentinel spell, which we’ll discuss more in a minute. Until Yuri gives you this spell, you’ll need to rely on methods 1 and 2.

Once you have caught the fish that Yuri has assigned to you for your challenge, he believes you are ready to prove your ability to deal with Sentinels. He asks you to catch him an Armored Redguard Sentinel to prove that you’re ready for the next stage of your training. I’d recommend going down the ramp in the Plaza of Conquests and trying there; they’re plentiful in that area, so you should have several opportunities to capture one.

armoredredguard

Once you’ve proven yourself by catching the Armored Redguard, return to Yuri and he’ll let you in on the worst-kept secret EVER; that Dragonspyre fishermen have a “Banish Rank 1 Sentinel” spell to help them do away with the pesky thieves and get on with the REAL fishing! (You should note that this spell only works on Rank 1 Sentinels; there are Rank 2 Sentinels which do seem to remain behind when this spell is cast). He grants you the spell and then challenges you to a fish-off; the first wizard to catch 3 each of ember fish and trigger fish will win!

embertrigger

This is where your new spells start to come in particularly handy. You can winnow fire fish (sending away all other schools), and then use your Reveal Fish Rank 1 spell to determine which ones are charred dekois and firecudas. Keep a close eye out for any fish that are not identified as rank 1 and fish them out; these will be either Fire Schools of Fish or Ember Parrots (in the Tower Archives) or Trigger Fish (in the Grand Chasm). Once you’ve caught 3 of each, Yuri gives you your very first DragonSpye aquarium as a reward for winning your friendly competition! You can buy recipes for these special lava tanks right at Yuri!

Now that you’ve completed your fishing quests, take the time to catch the rest of DragonSpyre’s fish; there are definitely some interesting new fish out there! Check out all the information below.
